We start out easy, then gradually go harder as fitness develops.

Yes, this applies to putting on bike races too. Here we go!

First up is this beast we are calling “Big Bad Hill Climb TT”. Tons of climbing and amazing scenery.

It is formatted as a Training Race, so no USAC Upgrade Points or anything like that.

A TT does not generate upgrade points anyway, so this does little except save us a bit of $$$ with USAC.

We have priced this event accordingly. BBHC will run on 6/26/2021.

If you like climbing, this is the ride for you. You know how we like the big climbs.

The climb starts on Glendora Mountain Rd, just past Big Dalton Canyon. There is a nice map here

BigBadHillClimbTT – MapMyRide

The flyer has all of the details, and will be found at Registration, which is through BikeReg.

Expect it to go live by the end of the week.

The first nine miles is vigorous climbing, followed by a bunch of climbing rollers, then the difficult climb through Baldy village, and finally the hardest part of the ride takes you to the end of Baldy Rd.

This is a 40km Time Trial, but it is nothing like the typical flat TT. Over 7300′ of climbing, and it is often cool or even chilly at the top, even on warm days. Plan accordingly. Yeah. 7300′ of climbing. Checked it twice.

We will be putting together some more events very soon, mostly USA Cycling sanctioned races.

Let your friends know, and we hope you come out and ride with us now that the world is trying to get “normal” again.

I guess I should get a little more current here …

Today USAC cancelled the 2020 Road and Track Championship races. They had been postponing them due to the Covid uncertainty, but there is a lot less of that uncertainty than there was only 4-5 weeks ago. So that is it.

Most events have been cancelled in Southern California since about March15, and there is not much relief in sight.

Your friends at AntiGravityCycling are looking at a couple of sites for running Time Trials. For one, we are hoping to run “the usual SCNCA ITT and TTT Championships”, except at a completely different location. More as this develops.

We also have a rolling/climbing terrain Road Race in the works, but cannot announce it until we get the municipal A-OK.

Meanwhile, hope you are getting some time

HERE THEY ARE!  As always, we still need some folks to send me Team Member names and License Numbers.

RESULTS will be posted in two groups.  FOUR Rider Teams once those are all finished, and then TWO Rider Teams once the last riders are in.

Finally, the last little hurdle has been cleared.

The First Firecracker 5000 is live. Brought to you by your friends at GS Andiamo and AntiGravity Cycling, in beautiful Redlands. Truly on the edge of civilization. Really! You can see it from the course! But freeway close too.

Read the flyer here: https://www.usacycling.org/events/getflyer.php?permit=2017-1061

Register here: https://www.usacycling.org/register/2017-1061

What it is all about:

JUNIORS and Cat5 and Cat4, mostly. Everybody can race, but we are really geared toward those categories.

TWO days, but FOUR races.

Monday, July 3: Morning is a Criterium. 800m loop around a parking lot sounds kinda dull, but this is no boring loop! There is enough of a rise up one of the long sides to ensure that a 20-30 second hard effort will put folks very deep into the hurt locker. The free ride down the other long side turns out to be another great place to get away too!

Afternoon is a short TT. A technical, tight climb up the parking lot. Then go find some cool place to hang out and recover. We will have cool drinks and snacks and things available for all, so help yourself!

If enough folks come out to the Firecracker, we will have a pizza party. Okay, we *are* going to have a pizza party. I mean if enough folks come out to race, we will buy YOU pizza. We like pizza. Probably you do too.

Tuesday, July 4: Morning is another Criterium. Except we go around the course the other direction. Nobody expects it at first, but it feels very different in the other direction.

Afternoon is Pursuit Racing. This is usually a track event, but our course lends itself to a Pursuit race. Two at a time, riders start on opposite sides of the course, start at the same time, and … pursue each other! This is scored by recording everybody’s times like in the TT. Fastest wins. We could have runoffs for the fastest. Again, if enough folks show up.

Scoring is Omnium style. This means that racers get points for each race, and most points wins. Each of the four events gets the same points, so they are all equally important. We like that, because it means anybody could do well.

It is all on the flyer. CASH prizes in lots of categories, MEDALS, primes, snacks, a huge grass park to hang out in before and after the races, real restrooms, lots of parking, a terrific course, and the only thing missing is YOU.

Results… Stage and Omnium placings and points…times tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel the race 11/23/2014 due to a late change in the permit requirements.  I have simply run out of time.  I will be refunding all entry fees, including USAC charges, etc.

I have never cancelled an event before, so this is new territory.

Thanks for supporting us in this event (and others!), and I apologize for not getting this done.

Steven Barnes

We will be back in the new year, determined to do a better job, be earlier with everything, and have more and better *everything*.

Here are the standings so far…

Death Valley Road Stage Race, Sherman Pass Road Race, Death Valley Road Omnium, Mt Whitney Stage Race, Everest Challenge Stage Race.

20 points for each day finished…10 points for DNF.

100, 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 for the top ten finishers.  GC for the Omnium and Stage Races.

EC gets double points for both categories…you already know why.

This is just the “message” you will get from BikeReg after you register.  Useful intel, so here you go!

Thanks for signing up for the Death Valley Road Omnium.  We really appreciate that you will be joining us.  It is a long drive, there are other things you could be doing, and we never forget that.

Registration / Start of Stage 1 is at the intersection of CA168 and Death Valley Road.  Same as the DVR Stage Race and Day 2 of the Everest Challenge.

We will have porta potties on site if there are enough people signed up ahead of time for us to afford it.  Like, that would be 30 by Thursday night.  We know this is a popular thing, but…stuff costs money, as you know.

Stage 1 is just the front side climb of Death Valley Road, from 3940′ to the summit at 7660′, which is 14 miles.  Timing stops there, and we will have the usual array of goodies and cold drinks.  And ice of course.

Stage 2 starts at the far end of DV Rd, so you will ride down down down into Death valley it’s own bad self.  There IS a sharp little pitch on the way down, but it is one of our favorite rides anywhere.  Give yourself about an hour to get to the bottom at 3200′.

Stage 2 climbs the back side of Death Valley Road to the same summit, and we will put the placings together for the Omnium Points and see who won.  Again with the food and drinks.

P.S. Apparently, BikeReg lets you sign up without putting in your USAC License number.  This is very very bad.  It makes us unhappy to have to copy down all those numbers at registration when all of those nice folks WHO PUT IN THEIR NUMBERS ONLINE are waiting behind you in line.  We are even more unhappy when we are online Sunday night looking up the numbers we forgot to ask for at registration.  PUT IN YOUR USAC DATA, including your team name also.  We WILL look up License numbers.  We absolutely, positively, definitely WILL NOT put in team names after the race.

First “Update” being published before Online Registration is even…you know, online.  BikeReg has finally been beaten to a pulp and the event will be live as soon as they can get it loaded.  Dang.

Yes, I have managed to get the flyer fixed (again), and it should have all of the information this time.  Stage 1 Start Times are EARLY, compared to our usual 8:00 starts… 7:00 and so on, hoping we can escape the heat.  HAHAHAHA!!

Good one, eh?  Yes, it will be warm, but yes we will also escape the heat at the Stage 1 Start at least.  It will NOT be chilly at the summit, so we will leave the hot chocolate stuff at home this time.  We **always** bring the stoves and HC, so that is going to be a little strange.

As you probably know already, an Omnium event has multiple stages, but scores the results by points rather than cumulative time.  Here is the Points Schedule for the DVRO:

Place                Stage 1 Points     Stage 2 Points

1                            35                                 40

2                            25                                 30

3                            20                                 22

4                            15                                  17

5                            12                                  14

6                            10                                  12

7                              9                                   11

8                               8                                   10

9                               7                                     9

10                             6                                     8

11                              5                                     7

12                              4                                     6

13                              3                                     5

14                              2                                     4

15 or higher          1                                     3

As you can see, the Stage 2 points are a little higher than the Stage 1 points.  Tie breaker will be the Stage 2 finishing position, since it is the tougher stage.
